A Distant Melody by Sarah Sundin

Never pretty enough to please her gorgeous mother, Allie will do anything to gain her approval--even marry a man she doesn't love.

Lt. Walter Novak--fearless in the cockpit but hopeless with women--takes his last furlough at home in California before being shipped overseas. Walt and Allie meet at a wedding and their love of music draws them together, prompting them to begin a correspondence that will change their lives.

As letters fly between Walt's muddy bomber base in England and Allie's mansion in an orange grove, their friendship binds them together. But can they untangle the secrets, commitments, and expectations that keep them apart?

A Distant Melody is the first book in the WINGS OF GLORY series, which follows the three Novak brothers, B-17 bomber pilots with the US Eighth Air Force stationed in England during World War II.

Here is my review of this incredible WWII romance:

First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to Sarah Sundin and her publisher for sending me a copy of "A Distant Melody" to review for them. I have always been grateful for this generosity, and I am trying to improve at being consistent in taking the time to thank these wonderfully giving individuals in a public forum. I really appreciate your time, effort and expense in making a reviewer copy available to me.

“A Distant Melody” is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read in quite a while. Sarah Sundin paints a picture of romance and friendship and discovery of what is meant to be in this novel that is promised as the first book in the Wings of Glory series. Our leading lady, Allie, has gone to northern California to be in a college friend’s wedding. On the train, she meets Walter, a soldier with a huge heart. When they learn that they are to be partnered at the wedding, an easy friendship forms. But Allie can’t help but feel that she is “settling” for her fiancé back home when her heart beats faster over Walter.

Walter is a pilot on furlough for 30 days. He is completely paralyzed around women unless they are spoken for, so when he notices Allie on the train with a little girl in her lap, an effortless dialog begins. Surprisingly, it continues when he learns that she isn’t the girl’s mother as he suspected, but instead she is to be his partner in the wedding he will stand in at the end of the week. For the first time in his life, Walter sees hope for his future – as Allie’s husband.

Sigh… This book grabbed my imagination from the very first page. I could smell the oranges. I could feel the tension between Walter and Allie. I laughed and found myself smiling as I read. I was absolutely captivated by the exchange of letters between these two while Walter was overseas and their lives changed. I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK TWO IN THIS SERIES!!!!!

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a...

Armor of God – Week One – Sizing Up The Enemy

Welcome to Boot Camp!   For the next seven weeks we will be training with our weapons (God’s Word and prayer) in preparation for the battle of our lives and the lives of others!   And we will be learning how to equip ourselves with the Armor of God. Priscilla Shirer’s Armor of God Bible study is a MUST-DO for EVERY BIBLE STUDENT!   I don’t mean to shout, but I can’t emphasize this enough!!!   We are at war boys and girls.   And our enemy wants to keep us in the dark about that fact.   If he can convince us that he does not exist or that our God is not good or that we are not loved and treasured by the King and Creator of the Universe, he wins the battle.   But can I share something with you?   OUR ENEMY HAS ALREADY LOST THE WAR!!!!!   His time is short and he is grasping at anything we leave dangling in an attempt to drag us down.   So let’s not leave too much dangling. My church begins the Armor of God study tonight (9/9/15). ...
