At Love's Command by Karen Witemeyer

Ex-cavalry officer Matthew Hanger leads a band of mercenaries who defend the innocent, but when a rustler's bullet leaves one of them at death’s door, they seek out help from Dr. Josephine Burkett. When Josephine's brother is abducted and she is caught in the crossfire, Matthew may have to sacrifice everything—even his team—to save her.

Pastor Matt's Sermon notes:

What action have you taken to implement the things God showed you last week?

What happens when we hear the Word?

Why do we gather?

Path – hardened by many feet packing down the dirt.

Rocky – shallow, no root.

Thorns – congested, no fruit.

Fruitful soil.

Reflect: what kind of heart do you have?

If you want to know Jesus, you have to follow Jesus.  There’s no casual relationship with Jesus!  It’s all or nothing.  Those who know Him will know the kingdom.  Those who don’t know Him, who are only curious about Him, won’t understand spiritual truth.

We don’t get to judge God’s Word.  God’s Word judges us.

Believing means seeing.

If we do not turn our beliefs into practice, they will not soon be our beliefs. – Alexander McLaren

Those with no root will flee when testing comes.

Most Christians are unfruitful.  James 1:22.

v. 21 - You must be filled often to be a light-bearer – just like a lamp.  Oil is indicative of the Holy Spirit.

Just like the Israelites couldn’t store manna, we need a constant infusion of God’s Word!

Get alone with Jesus!  When you want to hear from the Lord, you cannot be distracted.

Jesus will explain what He wants you to know.

Whenever you take a teaching in, you know there will be a test.  If you’re given a test, God has equipped you to deal with it.  He expects you to pass.

Fear and faith cannot live in the same heart.

The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren

First, I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to Susan May Warren and her publisher for sending me a copy of "The Heart of a Hero" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

Susan May Warren’s latest novel, “The Heart of a Hero” is an action-packed read perfect for a long summer weekend!  Aria Sinclair is caught smack-dab in the middle of a category 4 hurricane in Florida.  Jake Silver can’t get Aria out of his head and, hearing of her predicament, rushes down there in an attempt to rescue her…again.

This novel starts off at a run and doesn’t let up until the last page is turned!  I have not read “The Way of the Brave,” yet, which is the first offering in this Global Search and Rescue Series.  But even though Jake and Aria’s relationship began in that novel, this book reads really well on its own.  In fact, it makes me want to read the first book and I’ll definitely be picking up the last one.

“The Heart of a Hero” isn’t just an action-packed romance.  It’s a book with deep moral lessons that will leave you wanting to be a better human being.

3.How might I protect myself and those around me from being deceived?  (P. Matt: How attached are you to your Esau (flesh)?)

4.What am I doing to remember and act on what the Lord is teaching me?

P Matt

Gen 25

Look for Jesus in the OT.  It will make the stories more exciting because Jesus is exciting.

We are the espoused bride of Christ.

Abraham lived 35 years after Isaac married Rebekah and had 6 more sons in his old age.  The sons of Midian.

Midian – Moses dwelt in Midian and married a Midianite woman.

All had been given to Isaac.  All things are placed under the authority of Jesus Christ.

Abraham died when Esau and Jacob were about 15 years old.

Luke 15 – story of rich man, Lazarus.

Many people are sluggish in their spiritual walk.

Joktan – descendant of Shem.  1st inhabitants of Arab peninsula area of the Middle East.  Ishmael’s descendants joined the Arab nations.

Why was Rebekah barren?  Picture of us, the barren Bride of Christ who cannot bear fruit apart from Christ.

Jesus is able to save to the uttermost and the guttermost. – J. Vernon McGee

Isaac prays for Rebekah as Jesus prays for us.

Rebekah bears two different types of people.  Two different natures.  Gal 5:16-23

The flesh is not going to inherit the kingdom.

The fruit of the spirit is how we should live.  But my life is a mixture of both.

Because of my position in Christ, my flesh is put to death.  My two natures are at war – just like the twins jostled in Rebekah’s womb.

First birth is the weak birth, the flesh.  Esau is the flesh.  Heb 12

*What am I willing to give up spiritually to gratify my flesh?

There was no repentance found in Esau.  He wept and cried, but didn‘t repent.  Judas wept but didn’t repent.  Peter wept and repented.

Jacob wanted that blessing.

If the old nature is getting the better of you, pray.

We are set back by walking in the flesh.  It’s not a disqualification.  But it makes it hard to run.

Gen 26

Trials remind us of our need.

Isaac goes through something very similar to what his father went through.

When the Lord says, “no,” stay put.

Our kids learn from us.

Don’t be afraid of the truth.

Satan hates you!  He doesn’t want the living water of the Word flowing in your life!

I need the water of the Word every day!

If you are comfortable with complacency, you are heading toward calamity.

You can’t let the world stop you from digging another well.  Keep digging.  Dig deep.

Small minded people don’t treat others (esp enemies) with grace.

Esau marries two Hittite women to cause grief to his parents.

Gen 27

God’s Word is about the second birth!

Esau was a hunter.

Isaac wanted meat.

Isaac intends to give the blessing to Esau even though he knows the blessing should go to Jacob.

The flesh is our favorite son.

Isaac wants to bless Esau for bringing him flesh.

When you’re in the flesh, your life stinks.  But sometimes you like the smell.

You can’t nullify God’s promise by blowing it.  God is going to fulfill His promise!  You’re not making it to heaven because of anything you’re doing.  You’re making it because God has overridden anything you’ve ever done.  You’re making it because of Christ.

When Satan accuses you, he’s telling the truth!  But Christ overrides him!

Is Isaac trembling because he realizes he went against God’s plan?

Isaac was filled with Jacob’s goat meat.  There is no room for the meal Esau bought.  When we are filled with the Spirit, there is no room for the flesh!

So many of us want what we can get from God, but we don’t want God.  We want the blessing, but not to be the sort of person God can bless.

Rom 13:14 – we are not supposed to reserve a blessing for the flesh!

You can’t experience an encounter for the flesh unless you make provision for it.

Get rid of it!  Don’t provide for the flesh.

“you shall be away from the fatness and away from the dew of heaven”

One day, we will say “good riddance” to our Esau.

*How attached are you to your Esau?

Your natural man will never appreciate your spiritual man.

God will deal with it!  “Get your hands off and let Me be God!”

Gen 28

What happens when your Esau sees your Jacob blessed?

You cannot bless your flesh.

You cannot spiritualize the flesh.

When Esau sees Jacob blessed, he goes to Ishmael for another wife.

All your flesh can do is go to more flesh.

Don’t work on the flesh!  Kill it!!!

Stairway to heaven = Jesus Christ

How sweet is it when the Lord speaks to you, declares His love for you, reminds you that He will never let you go?

The narrow gate is the stairway to heaven.

I need to see Christ as my Savior in this place of desperation!

When you’re troubled, do you complain?  Or do you talk to the Lord about it?  This trouble could be anointed to transform you.  This is “big boy” teaching.

Worship God when you discover those places.  Maybe you’ll rename them.

Be a cheerful giver.

The rock pillows can be a blessing.

Don’t be a blamer.

God uses places of stress.

God is interested in molding our character and helping us grow.

2.How are your circle of friends encouraging you and holding you accountable?

3.What areas of your life are divide and how can you bring those areas under the lordship of Christ?

Pastor Matt:

Jesus is bringing the man into the light.  This was a plot that was schemed by evil men, so Jesus brought the man out of darkness.  Then He questions the plotters.  He knew they had killing on their minds.

Ooh, to know the good we are to do and not do it is evil.  We call it apathy or complacency.  OUCH!

Jesus was angered by the hardening of their hearts, but He was grieved for them because He loved them.

When I do what Jesus says, a miracle happens.  He may not heal me in this life.

Pharisees had no compassion.  Mercy is the exception.  The wages of sin is death.  That’s the rules.  God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…

Jesus’ holy purity was constantly burnt by the fire of sin wherever He went.

Blaspheming the Holy Spirit.  Ascribing what the HS does to the devil.  Rejection of salvation.

Did Abraham know human sacrifice was wrong?

Would I do something I thought to be completely outside the character of God just because He said to do it?  Or would I figure I was hearing the voice of the enemy and ignore the command?

“Ella Enchanted” – “I will not be obedient!”

PQT today in Acts 10:1-23 – Peter and Cornelius.  The vision: kill and eat.  Kosher diet was Biblical.  God told Peter to eat “unclean” Gentile foods and built a bridge from the Jews to the Gentiles, not just from Peter to Cornelius!

How much time between chapters 22 and 23?

Pastor Matt Sermon Notes:

Gen 22

Tests are privileges, not punishments.

Tests must go beyond your understanding.

My obedience affects others.

Let’s get extravagant with our worship.

Gen 24

Abraham = Father; servant = Holy Spirit; son = Son; bride = us; angel = prophets; 10 camels = the Law (10 cmdmts)(they help us know we’re sinners)

24:55 – remain 10d = remain under law?  If you do, you produce flesh (Ishmael)

We become the bride, the Law is satisfied, the HS gives gifts

J. Vernon McGee:

Gen 22

This is a picture of God’s sacrifice of Jesus.

A was willing to do what he was taught was wrong bec G asked him to do it.

22:4 – 3rd day – A rec’d I back (resurrection)

22:6 – Isaac carried the wood, Jesus carried the cross.

22:7 – call for lamb is prophetic.  V. 13 reveals ram was given for this sacrifice.

This is the 7th and last appearance of God to A.

Jas 2:21 and Rom 4:1-3 – both are right

Jesus died on this ridge.  Not necessarily the same spot.

Gen 23

Burying Sarah in the cave at Machpelah speaks to his faith that God will, in fact, give him the Promised Land

2nd or 3rd most important mosque to the Islamic faith is built over the tombs of the Patriarchs in Hebron.

Gen 24

Major break in 2nd divison of Genesis

First Div 1-11 – four great events

Second and third Div  12-50 – four outstanding individuals

12-23 Abraham, the man of faith

24-26 Isaac, the beloved son

Three great events in man’s life: birth, marriage, death.  He has a choice in one of those (sometimes).

God is interested in who you marry.

Two institutions God gave man: marriage and government.  When these are broken, society falls apart.

The home is the backbone of society.

Rebekah is beautiful, smart and polite.  I see generous and a servant’s heart.

Abraham’s servant points to his master and doesn’t speak about himself.  Just like the Holy Spirit.

Rebekah didn’t hesitate to go with him.  What did the servant say about Isaac that made her so willing to go?

3.What needs to change to make your Sabbath more of a celebration?

Pastor Matt Sermon Notes:

Jesus was busy.

People were coming to Jesus for healing.

More of Jesus’ doings are recorded in this book than what He said.

Jesus was the same person inside and out.

Jesus is more interested in the soul than the physical healing.

Not all sin results in someone becoming sick.  But sometimes it is.

*God knows what we’re thinking.

Which is easier?  For Jesus, healing because He would be paying for the forgiveness of the sin.

There’s a danger when we place higher importance on physical healing than the healing of the soul.

Don’t necessarily go to church to get something out of it.  Go to give something into it.

The Pharisees are following Jesus around to find fault with Him.  Popping out of the field like whack-a-mole!
