Homiletics - Psalm 23

Divisions (run-on sentence OK, direct verbiage from Scripture/Principles are Aims for each Division – a truth about God, a truth about man, a truth about God’s relationship to man; a sin to avoid, promise to trust, example to follow, command to obey, truth to believe):

1.The Lord is my Shepherd (Psalm 23:1-4)

Principle:  Jesus cares for His people’s “present” in every way.

2.You prepare a table (Psalm 23:5-6)

Principle:  Jesus cares for His people’s “future” in every way.

Subject Sentence (10-word sentence with proper structure showing exactly where you are in Scripture):

I will dwell forever with the Lord, my Shepherd.

Aim (“To Cause My Audience To…” Know, See, Learn, Understand, etc.):

TCMATK God cares for, and dwells with, His people.

Application (not yes or no question.  Meant to bring about heart change):

1. What is your daily walk with God like?  What has Jesus given you that you’d like to thank Him for?  When has Jesus given you rest and enjoyment in His creation?  How might you make some time this week to enjoy His creation?  When has Jesus led you beside quiet waters?  How does Jesus refresh your soul?  Where is Jesus guiding you right now?  Do you find it difficult or easy to not fear evil?  What needs to change in your heart and mind to make your fears flee?  What are your feelings toward Christ’s discipline in your life?  What changes will you make to embrace and welcome His discipline?

2. How has Jesus provided for you in the midst of persecution?  How has He protected you from enemies?  How has God made you glad and brought you joy?  Where is your cup overflowing?  How is Jesus’s goodness and mercy following you today?  In what ways are you preparing yourself to dwell with Jesus forever?  How are you enjoying the benefits of dwelling with Jesus now?

The Big Idea (author’s main purpose in writing; the one thing all the other things in the passage is about; if you couldn’t talk about it, you would still understand the passage is trying to convey this):

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a...

Armor of God – Week One – Sizing Up The Enemy

Welcome to Boot Camp!   For the next seven weeks we will be training with our weapons (God’s Word and prayer) in preparation for the battle of our lives and the lives of others!   And we will be learning how to equip ourselves with the Armor of God. Priscilla Shirer’s Armor of God Bible study is a MUST-DO for EVERY BIBLE STUDENT!   I don’t mean to shout, but I can’t emphasize this enough!!!   We are at war boys and girls.   And our enemy wants to keep us in the dark about that fact.   If he can convince us that he does not exist or that our God is not good or that we are not loved and treasured by the King and Creator of the Universe, he wins the battle.   But can I share something with you?   OUR ENEMY HAS ALREADY LOST THE WAR!!!!!   His time is short and he is grasping at anything we leave dangling in an attempt to drag us down.   So let’s not leave too much dangling. My church begins the Armor of God study tonight (9/9/15). ...

Armor of God – Week Five – The Shield of Faith

I must admit that this listening sheet has notes written in every corner and margin.   I was starving for a lesson of faith, apparently.   This is some of what I learned from Video #5: ·          Faith is acting like God is telling the truth. ·          Active faith is a shield. ·          Faith is not foolishness.   It may look like it to the world, though. ·          Whatever God has called me to, He will carry me through. ·          God’s call will sound irrational because His thoughts are not ours. ·          When the dots don’t connect, but we do His bidding anyway, that’s faith! ·          God is sustaining universes not yet discovered! ·     ...
