Homiletics - Obadiah

Divisions (run-on sentence OK, direct verbiage from Scripture/Principles are Aims for each Division – a truth about God, a truth about man, a truth about God’s relationship to man; a sin to avoid, promise to trust, example to follow, command to obey, truth to believe):

1.God is sovereign (1-4)

Principle:  No one escapes God’s sovereignty.

2.Deceit and violence destroy (5-14)

Principle:  Disaster awaits the ungodly.

3.The Day of the Lord is near for all nations (15-21)

Principle:  Judgment Day is coming.

Subject Sentence (10-word sentence with proper structure showing exactly where you are in Scripture):

Obadiah’s Vision: what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom.

Aim (“To Cause My Audience To…” Know, See, Learn, Understand, etc.):

TCMATK God rewards submission and will judge ungodliness.

Application (not yes or no question.  Meant to bring about heart change):

1.Where are you struggling to accept God’s sovereignty over your life, and what steps will you take to submit to His authority?

2.Where have you deceived yourself by walking with the world, and how will you get back in step with your Savior, Jesus?

3.How are you preparing yourself and others for God’s judgment?

The Big Idea (author’s main purpose in writing; the one thing all the other things in the passage is about; if you couldn’t talk about it, you would still understand the passage is trying to convey this):

Judgment

Lawyers deal with stuff most people can't even imagine. That's why getting help from someone who gets it can make such a big difference. If you take the time to heal from old stress or emotional boo-boos, you can feel better, get your drive back, and remember why you wanted to be a counseling for lawyers in the first place. Taking care of your mind helps you and your clients.

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a...

Armor of God – Week One – Sizing Up The Enemy

Welcome to Boot Camp!   For the next seven weeks we will be training with our weapons (God’s Word and prayer) in preparation for the battle of our lives and the lives of others!   And we will be learning how to equip ourselves with the Armor of God. Priscilla Shirer’s Armor of God Bible study is a MUST-DO for EVERY BIBLE STUDENT!   I don’t mean to shout, but I can’t emphasize this enough!!!   We are at war boys and girls.   And our enemy wants to keep us in the dark about that fact.   If he can convince us that he does not exist or that our God is not good or that we are not loved and treasured by the King and Creator of the Universe, he wins the battle.   But can I share something with you?   OUR ENEMY HAS ALREADY LOST THE WAR!!!!!   His time is short and he is grasping at anything we leave dangling in an attempt to drag us down.   So let’s not leave too much dangling. My church begins the Armor of God study tonight (9/9/15). ...

Armor of God – Week Five – The Shield of Faith

I must admit that this listening sheet has notes written in every corner and margin.   I was starving for a lesson of faith, apparently.   This is some of what I learned from Video #5: ·          Faith is acting like God is telling the truth. ·          Active faith is a shield. ·          Faith is not foolishness.   It may look like it to the world, though. ·          Whatever God has called me to, He will carry me through. ·          God’s call will sound irrational because His thoughts are not ours. ·          When the dots don’t connect, but we do His bidding anyway, that’s faith! ·          God is sustaining universes not yet discovered! ·     ...
