Divisions (run-on
sentence OK, direct verbiage from Scripture/Principles are Aims for each
Division):
1.John the Baptist prepares the way for the Lord
Principle: God prepares people to receive Himself.
2.Jesus is baptized and identified as the Son of God
Principle: God
loves and is pleased with His children.
3.Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, endures temptation
Principle: God
empowers His people to withstand temptation.
Subject Sentence (10-word
sentence with proper structure showing exactly where you are in Scripture):
John preaches and baptizes Jesus, Who is Spirit-filled and
tempted.
Aim (“To Cause My
Audience To…” Know, See, etc.):
TCMATK the Holy Spirit empowers God’s people to carry out
God’s plan
Application (not
yes or no question. Meant to bring about
heart change):
1.What is keeping you from seizing opportunities to
prepare the way for the Lord into the lives of the people around you?
2.What needs to change in your thinking for you to be a
better example as a child of God?
3.How are you preparing your heart to endure temptation
victoriously?
And some extra questions I'm asking myself in my summer study...
How would I describe God in this passage? God is a detailed
planner. Under a specific Caesar,
with a particular Judean Governor and certain tetrarchs and high priests in
office, His Word came to John. God is a meticulous clue-giver. He spoke to Isaiah about John and there are
Scripture verses about him in that book. God is a mighty empowerer. He made
John bold to declare his message of God’s salvation and the coming
Messiah. God is a wisdom bestower. He filled
John’s mouth with the answers to the questions of the people. God is the One Who draws men to Himself. He
drew John’s audiences to hear the good news of God’s salvation. God is a colorful ancestry-builder. Just look at Jesus’ genealogy. God is
Jehovah-Ezer, the Lord my Help.
Who are “the lost”? Tiberias, Pilate, Herod, Philip, Lysanias,
Annas, Caiaphas. The people in the country around the Jordan. Those coming to be baptized. The crowds.
Brood of vipers. Tax
collectors. Soldiers. People who wondered if John was the Messiah. I wonder is
Where do I see the Holy Spirit’s power? In Isaiah, proclaiming the coming of the
voice calling in the desert: prepare the way for the Lord. In John’s bold words to confront the people. In John’s answers to the peoples’
questions. In his humility to not be
worthy of untying the Lord’s sandals.
Descending bodily on Jesus in the form of a dove. Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, Who led
Him into the wilderness to be tempted.
Jesus withstood the temptation of food, of accepting authority/ambition
and of proving what He meant to the Father.
Where do I see an emphasis on prayer? Jesus prayed when He was baptized (Lk 3:21)
Where do I see joy? God’s declaration that Jesus is His Son, Whom
He loves and with Whom He is well pleased.
How could this joy be my strength today? God rejoices over me with singing (Zeph 3:17)
like a parent sings over their child. “You are my sunshine. My only sunshine. You make me happy…” He loves me and is pleased with me because He
sees Jesus when He looks at me.
What do I love about Jesus? I love His humility. He was baptized by John. I love His obedience and submission to the
Holy Spirit. He followed the Spirit into
the desert to be tempted by the devil. I
love that He didn’t succumb to temptation, but leaned on Scripture. And I love the fact that He knows the
Scriptures and just the right Scripture verse to quote.
What references to food do I see in this
passage? Jesus being hungry
during the time of His temptation. He
resisted feeding His body and giving in to the devil.
If this were the only page torn out of a
Bible I possessed, what would I treasure about it? I love the details presented about the
historical timeline of when John received his word from God. God used John the Baptist. John was a powerful witness, full of the
Spirit, yet he went to prison. Jesus
endured temptation. And the devil
tempted Jesus with food. I’m not the
only one who is tempted by food. Jesus
overcame. Jesus lives in me. I can overcome through Him. I can do all things through Christ Who gives
me strength.
