Today's Daily Devotional

Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains! For the Lord comforts His people. Isaiah 49:13

05/13/09 Isn’t this a beautiful verse of scripture? Sometimes reading the same verse in another translation of the Bible helps to shed light on what the verse is really trying to say. For this verse, the New American Standard version adds that the Lord will have compassion on the afflicted. That is precious. The Hebrew for “have compassion” is “racham,” meaning to love, love deeply, have mercy, be compassionate, have tender affection, have compassion. I used to work with a woman who had a sign hanging in her office that said: Be Compassion. What a treasure! If you substitute the word “compassion” for the others in our definition, you have a reminder to “Be Love” or “Be Mercy” of “Be Tender Affection”. How lovely. Now I challenge you: Be Compassion.
