Homiletics Matthew 27:32-66

1	27:32-34	Simon of Cyrene compelled to bear cross; when they come Golgotha (place of a skull), they gave Him vinegar with gall, He would not drink.
2	27:35-37	They crucified Him, parted garments, casting lots, fulfilled: They parted garments, upon vesture they cast lots; sitting, they watched; set over head accusation: Jesus King of Jews.
3	27:38-40	2 thieves crucified w/Him on right and left; they that passed reviled Him, wagging heads; saying: Thou destroyest temple, buildest in 3 days, save thyself, if thou be Son of God, come down.
4	27:41-44	Chief Priests mocking with scribes and elders: He saved others, Himself cannot save, if He King of Israel, let Him come down, we believe; He trusted God, let Him deliver, He said I am Son of God; thieves crucified w/Him cast same in his teeth.
5	27:45-49	From the 6th hour to the 9th, darkness over all land; about 9th hour, J cried: My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me; some said, this man calleth Elias; one took sponge, filled with vinegar, put on reed, gave Him to drink; the rest: let us see whether Elias save Him.
6	27:50-54	J cried again, yielded ghost; veil of temple rent in twain top to bottom, earth did quake, rock rent; graves opened, bodies of saints arose; came out of graves after his resurrection, went into city, appeared to many; When Centurion and they w/him saw earthquake and those things, they feared: truly this was Son of God.
7	27:55-61	Many women there; Mary Magdalene, Mary mother of James and Joses, mother of Zebedee’s children; when even come, Joseph of Arimathea (Jesus’ disciple) went to Pilate, begged body of J; Pilate commanded body delivered; Joseph wrapped in clean cloth, laid in his own tomb, rolled great stone, departed; Mary Magdalene and other Mary sitting against sepulcher.
8	27:62-64	Next day, chief priests/Pharisees to Pilate: we remember deceiver said after 3 days, I rise again; command sepulcher made sure until 3rd day lest disciples come and steal Him and say He is risen; so last error worse than 1st.
9	27:65-66	Pilate: ye have a watch, go, make it sure as ye can; they went, made sepulcher sure, sealing stone, setting watch.

Principle:		Jesus’ death opened the Holy of Holies to all men.
3	27:62-66	Next day, chief priests/Pharisees: we remember deceiver said after 3 days, I rise again; command sepulcher lest disciples come and steal Him and say He is risen; so last error worse than 1st.  Pilate: ye have a watch, go, make it sure as ye can; they went, made sepulcher sure, sealing stone, setting watch.
Principle:		We need to act on what Jesus said when we remember it.

Application:

1	When have you been called to bear a cross and what was your reaction to that calling? Why do you think Jesus refused to drink the vinegar with gall? If you were one of the soldiers sitting and watching, what might be going through your mind? What Scriptures were fulfilled at the crucifixion?
2	What caused the darkness from the 6th to the 9th hour? Why might God have forsaken Jesus? When have you endured a prolonged “darkness” and what was your response to it? Why might the onlookers have believed that Jesus was calling Elias? What happened when Jesus gave up His ghost? What is the significance of the tearing of the temple veil? If you had witnessed these events, how might they have changed your thinking and faith? What is significant about Joseph of Arimathea collecting Jesus’ body? Why do you think Mary and Mary sat against the sepulcher?
3	What do you do when you are reminded of a word Jesus spoke? What has Jesus said to you in the past that you’ve recently recalled but haven’t turned into action? How will you apply this to your life now? What did the Chief Priests and Pharisees fear? What did they hope to receive from Pilate? What was Pilate’s response? What action did the Chief Priests and Pharisees take? In what way do you verify the truth with regard to the Savior?
