CONTEST:
Susan Meissner has offered a copy of this book to the winner of my contest. Leave a comment on this post and a way to contact you, and I will draw a winner on Monday, June 8th. This prize is an Advanced Review Copy, but Susan has told me that it's a beautifully packaged book that looks like the real thing.
Here is my review of this incredible read:
First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to Susan Meissner and her publisher for sending me a copy of "Shape of Mercy" to review for them. I have always been grateful for this generosity, and I am trying to improve at being consistent in taking the time to thank these wonderfully giving individuals in a public forum. I really appreciate your time, effort and expense in making a reviewer copy available to me.
“The Shape of Mercy” is one of the best books I’ve read in quite a while. Set in modern times, the main character, Lauren, has taken a job transcribing the diary of a young girl who was accused of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials. Every character in this novel captured my heart! The perfect blending of past and present showed that we may not be the same as our ancestors, but we’re not so different, either.
Susan Meissner has created an engaging, heartbreaking, timeless novel that got me seriously thinking about how our American past could be so dark and sordid, and wondering about the path for our future. Is history really destined to repeat itself? How could we stop such a horrible occurrence if such a time did come back to haunt us? Even though I knew the outcome of the diary beforehand, I still read the story hoping… I wanted the best for Mercy as I gained understanding of the past. I watched Lauren grow and change as she transcribed the diary and felt hopeful for her (and her father) as well.
