Welcome to Week One of Angela Thomas’ “When Wallflowers
Dance: Becoming a Woman of Righteous
Confidence”.
This week’s video, “Come to the Altar” had me reading 1
Peter 2:2-3 and 1 John 4:11. Angela told
a story about a trip she chaperoned to Italy.
And she left me with a couple of thoughts: “I’ve been a dorky disciple.” Lord, would you make me passionate and
alive? “Have you tasted that the Lord is
good? Then it’s time to grow up in your
salvation!”
This week’s homework, “Come to the Altar” encouraged us to
create a space somewhere where we could meet God daily – like at an altar. What a beautiful way to begin a Bible
study. My father-in-law’s old footlocker
sits at the foot of our bed. I think
I’ll kneel here to talk to God.
Angela’s first activity each day is to pray a verse of
Scripture. Praying Psalm 8 on day one brought
me to tears for the woman who was sitting near me during the video and decided
to walk out of the study thinking it “wasn’t for her”. I’ve been praying for her ever since. I should have gotten out of my seat and
followed her outside. I made attempts to
contact her, but was unsuccessful. Live
and learn, I suppose.
Throughout the rest of the week, we released burdens and
received “A Girlfriend Nudge” to memorize the books of the New Testament in
order. I’ve always wanted to do this,
but just never did. Well, I did it as I
walked a 5k around the .2 mile track at my YMCA. Thank You, Jesus!
We also encountered several treasures of our
inheritance: we’ve been reconciled to
God, we’ve been redeemed, we are saved from condemnation, we’ve been made
children of God, we’ve been forgiven and justified and we’ve been made objects. These are mind-blowing truths that must
really be savored on a daily basis. I’m
not going to explain the last one about being made objects to you. You’ll have to check out the study,
yourself. And, believe me, it’s worth
it!
