In light of the promises listed in Exodus 5:6-8, why was all of the plaguing of Egypt necessary? God certainly could have softened pharaoh’s heart and freed Israel before the staff of God first touched the ground at pharaoh’s feet and began writhing like a serpent!
Ultimately, we need to know that Our Lord is NOT frivolous! There is purpose and passionate love for His creation in everything He does! We need to take that on faith, and He will give us experience to back it up!
So, what was His purpose? That is a tough question. I believe the answer has facets beyond human comprehension, but here are some of my thoughts:
God won’t manipulate us. He gave us free will, and He expects us to use it! Preferably to choose Him!
Each plague demonstrated God’s supremacy over an Egyptian deity. He wanted Egypt and Israel alike to know that HE IS GOD!!!!!
If this period of history weren’t a major struggle, would it have been documented? Would Moses have been chosen and trained to work with God to deliver Israel? Would we have the pyramid on the back of our $1 bill?
Those are just a few of my thoughts. I’d be interested to read yours. But here’s a question, first: Is there a counterpart to this story in the New Testament? Certainly. Scholars agree that Moses is a Christ figure…a deliverer…one who faced the enemy and didn’t back down.
And personally, I see applications in today’s newspaper! The economy worsens. Unemployment is on the rise. The world financial market is failing. People are losing hope and taking their lives. Some think it’s acceptable to take huge bonuses in the midst of this crisis. The polar ice cap is melting. Natural disasters continue. Terrorism is a reality. These newsworthy items are like those Old Testament plagues. Those of us who are awaiting the second coming of Christ, call them “birth pains.”
God has already sent Christ just as He sent Moses to prophesy to pharaoh that the death of the firstborn was upon the land of Egypt. One last chance. Very soon, Jesus will come – joyfully to embrace and deliver those who have accepted Him as Lord and Savior; solemnly that there will be some left behind.
Make no mistake, though. HE IS COMING! He doesn’t tarry. He isn’t frivolous. He wants all men to repent and be saved. That is why He plagued Egypt. That is why He plagues the world, today.
Have you been tarrying? Do you need to pray? Do it now! Say,
Father, I come to you now to say I believe You. I believe in You. I want to know You. I recognize that Jesus came to earth to die for my sins and that He rose again to conquer death for me. I ask You, Jesus, to come into my heart and lead my life from now on. In Your name. Amen.
Now, please let me know - or let a Pastor or Christian friend know that you've come to Christ. God bless you.
