REVIEW: Pray Big: The Power of Pinpoint Prayers by Will Davis Jr.

First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to Pastor Will Davis Jr. and his publisher for sending me a copy of "Faith Set Free" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

This book was not what I was expecting – literally. I signed up to review “Pray Big: The Power of Pinpoint Prayers”. What showed up in my mailbox was something completely different. Some people would be disappointed that what they planned for didn’t come to pass. And I will admit that I had to do a bit of perusing before I was completely on board with the unexpected title. But I don’t believe that I would’ve received this book if God hadn’t intended it to be so. Rather than a disappointment, “Faith Set Free” has been a surprise party! And I am the guest of honor. Will Davis Jr., Senior Pastor of Austin Christian Fellowship Church, has penned a valuable prayer resource that should be on every Christian’s bookshelf. Not gathering dust, but being highlighted and referenced and read in conjunction with the Bible.

This wonderful book on prayer takes the concept of pinpoint prayers (what I wanted to study when I requested “Pray Big”) and focuses it on how to pray for yourself. This is something I definitely needed. Too many times, I have fallen for the lie that praying for myself is selfish. But in actuality, praying for yourself is necessary – like exercise and training for a soldier. And that is what we Christians are: soldiers in a very real spiritual war that often bleeds into our daily lives. Thanks for the reminder, Pastor Davis. There’s even a list of pinpoint prayers in the back of the book which can be used verbatim in your prayer time. These prayers are built from scripture, so they are inherently in accordance with God’s will. You can also use the technique to pray other scriptures. “Faith Set Free” will encourage you to pray for yourself with your Bible open. It is an encouraging and empowering read. And with a bit of rewording, you can use these same verses to pray for others.

A final personal note to Pastor Davis: Please tell your Mom that she made me laugh a lot as I was growing up. Give her my heartfelt thanks for being such a wonderful blessing.

Hey Stacey -

Sorry about the book mix-up. I was running low on Pray Big, but I thought I had yours out before that happened. I'm glad Faith Set Free ended up being great for you.

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a while, now.   And I would like to share wit
