Divisions (run-on sentence OK, direct verbiage from Scripture/Principles are Aims for each Division – a truth about God, a truth about man, a truth about God’s relationship to man; a sin to avoid, promise to trust, example to follow, command to obey, truth to believe):

1.The word of the Lord came to Joel about destruction (Joel 1)

Principle:  Destruction will lead to mourning.

2.The day of the Lord is coming; return to the Lord your God (Joel 2)

Principle:  The Lord’s care for His people is worthy of rejoicing and praise.

3.In those days, I will restore the fortunes of Judah and put all nations on trial (Joel 3)

Principle:  The Lord will judge and restore.

4.The vision of Obadiah about Edom: the day of the Lord is near (Obadiah)

Principle:  The Lord will judge all sins.

Subject Sentence (10-word sentence with proper structure showing exactly where you are in Scripture):

XXXThe Lord’s word to Joel and Obadiah’s vision about Edom

Aim (“To Cause My Audience To…” Know, See, Learn, Understand, etc.):

TCMATK  When the day of the Lord comes, God will restore His people and judge the nations.

Application (not yes or no question.  Meant to bring about heart change):

1.What areas of your life or ministry feel decimated, and how are you working with the Lord to bring life back to those places?

2.Joel 2 pictures an army going into battle.  Soldiers wear armor.  Looking at the Armor of God in Galatians 6:1-18, which pieces of the armor do you need to strengthen, and how might you do that?

3.How are you preparing for the Lord’s return?

4.Which of Edom’s sins do you find yourself committing?  How might you stop?  Which of Edom’s sins do you have a problem forgiving?  What action can you take right now to forgive?

The Big Idea (author’s main purpose in writing; the one thing all the other things in the passage is about; if you couldn’t talk about it, you would still understand the passage is trying to convey this):

Judgment and Deliverance

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a...

Armor of God – Week One – Sizing Up The Enemy

Welcome to Boot Camp!   For the next seven weeks we will be training with our weapons (God’s Word and prayer) in preparation for the battle of our lives and the lives of others!   And we will be learning how to equip ourselves with the Armor of God. Priscilla Shirer’s Armor of God Bible study is a MUST-DO for EVERY BIBLE STUDENT!   I don’t mean to shout, but I can’t emphasize this enough!!!   We are at war boys and girls.   And our enemy wants to keep us in the dark about that fact.   If he can convince us that he does not exist or that our God is not good or that we are not loved and treasured by the King and Creator of the Universe, he wins the battle.   But can I share something with you?   OUR ENEMY HAS ALREADY LOST THE WAR!!!!!   His time is short and he is grasping at anything we leave dangling in an attempt to drag us down.   So let’s not leave too much dangling. My church begins the Armor of God study tonight (9/9/15). ...
