REVIEW: Fireproof

When my husband and I entered the theater on opening night, we were shocked! Expecting the same turnout as we experienced when we went to see "Thr3e" (my family of four and one other person), imagine my surprise when this theater was PACKED! I mean, several church groups of 15 or more filled the seats. HALLELUJAH! And this group was out for a night of fun. They were chatting among themselves and entertaining the rest of us. This had the energentic feel of a movie pre-screening, which is definitely a more intense theater experience.

When the film began, my heart sunk. The only acting taking place onscreen was from Kirk Cameron! I felt bad for dragging my husband to see "Fireproof" and found myself wishing I had purchased tickets for "Eagle Eye" instead. Then, the Holy Spirit kicked my heart into high gear! I got so totally invested in this story of a firefighter and his crumbling marriage that I felt every argument's sucker-punch and anger and pain and the effort this hurting hero was investing in trying to fix things. I laughed and cried and gasped at emotional scenes.

I LOVED THIS FILM!!!

The church that made this movie (and "Facing the Giants" and "Flywheel") has a real gift for storytelling and using the medium of film to bring their stories to the masses. I pray that they keep making movies and blessing others with this ministry.

"Fireproof"'s effects were immediate. I walked out of the theater wanting to be a better, more attentive wife. I know my husband felt a similar commitment. I can guarantee we weren't the only ones.

Since then, we've picked up the book "The Love Dare" which is a wonderful devotional. I can't recommend the packaged Bible studies, though, for a couple of reasons. First, I haven't thoroughly cone through the participant's guide, but it looks like a decent study. Second, the DVD that goes with it doesn't offer any real teaching, just 2-5 minute clips of the film to view before each session. Since I plan to purchase the movie when it comes out on DVD, I should have simply purchased the participant book and saved a few bucks...

I highly recommend this movie! See it with your spouse. See it with your kids - show them what marriage is supposed to look like. See it with your extended family. See it with your church. JUST SEE IT!

We really loved it (even with some of the "small budget" issues).

I just got back from watching Fireproof... it was great to see such a different-flavored movie on the regular, big screen

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a while, now.   And I would like to share wit
