In the gospel of John chapter two, Jesus changes water to wine at a wedding. I know it was the best tasting wine ever made! When this wine was poured for the master of the banquet, and he tasted it, he declared in verse 10, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best ‘till now.”
This idea makes sense. Give out the good stuff while the guests can taste a difference and maybe even appreciate it. Once they’re drunk, they won’t know they’re being served the cheap stuff! This would certainly save a few dollars on a celebration.
But God spares no expense on His children! The wine that He gives us at the beginning of our celebration with Him is salvation, and it is so sweet. It frees us of our shackles and gives us a reason to live, a reason to celebrate. And the party doesn’t stop there.
As the feast progresses, the Lord brings out better and better wine. Sweet tastes of the kingdom are available for us to sample and savor as we seek God. The more we know and love Jesus, the better the wine He serves us.
Each day as evening approaches, I want to look back on the day and know that I’ve loved the Lord and sought Him with all my heart. Then, I will be able to say, “Thank you, Jesus, for saving the best ‘till now.”
