A Summer of Psalms

This summer, I am studying several Psalms with a great group of women!  It’s a twelve (12) week study called Psalms: Prayers of the Heart by Eugene Petersen.  It’s a really tiny book with very little commentary, and some powerful questions.  I say this to explain the reason for choosing the Psalms that I’ll be writing about over the next twelve weeks.  Here is the schedule:

Week 1 – Psalm 1

Week 2 – Psalm 2

Week 3 – Psalm 3

Week 4 – Psalm 8

Week 5 – Psalm 51

Week 6 – Psalm 103

Week 7 – Psalm 23

Week 8 – Psalm 137

Week 9 – Psalm 6

Week 10 – Psalm 73

Week 11 – Psalm 90

Week 12 – Psalm 150

The Psalms are broken into five books.  Psalm 1-41 is Book 1.  Psalm 42-72 is Book 2.  Psalm 73-89 is Book 3.  Psalm 90-106 is Book 4.  Psalm 107-150 is Book 5.  Each book ends with the phrase, “Praise be to the Lord… Amen and Amen!”  These five books correspond with the five books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy).  According to the YouVersion introduction to the NIV version of Psalms, the Psalms tell a three-part story of Israel’s redemption: monarchy (Book 1 and 2), exile (Book 3 and 4) and return (Book 5).  The individual Psalms express a wide variety of responses to God.  The overall collection celebrates the work of God in history to save His people.

I hope you will join me as we examine a selection of Psalms this summer!  Posts will begin this weekend!

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a while, now.   And I would like to share wit
