Homiletics: Matthew 11-12

Divisions (run-on sentence OK, direct verbiage from Scripture/Principles are Aims for each Division – a truth about God, a truth about man, a truth about God’s relationship to man; a sin to avoid, promise to trust, example to follow, command to obey, truth to believe):

1.Jesus tells John’s disciples to report what they see and hear, asks the people what they expected to see regarding John, declares woes to cities that rejected His miracles and calls people to Himself (11:1-30)

Principle:  Jesus’ activity should lead to repentance, not indifference.

2.Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath and astonishes the people (12:1-23)

Principle:  Jesus values people, but not all people value Jesus.

3.Jesus teaches the Pharisees: “a house divided against itself will not stand” and “by your words you will be acquitted/condemned.” (12:24-37)

Principle:  Jesus brings unity to His people.

4.Jesus speaks about a wicked generation and who His family is (12:38-50)

Principle:  Jesus’ family is made up of His true disciples who do the will of the Father.

Subject Sentence (10-word sentence with proper structure showing exactly where you are in Scripture):

Jesus speaks about John, Sabbath, words, wicked generation and family.

Aim (“To Cause My Audience To…” Know, See, Learn, Understand, etc.):

TCMATK The Christian life is a dynamic relationship with Christ honed by continual growth and change until we are ushered into His presence.

Application (not yes or no question.  Meant to bring about heart change):

1.Where has Jesus’ teaching recently fallen on my deaf ears, and what are my plans to repent?

2.How will you submit to Jesus in areas where you have been resisting His lordship over your life?

3.What needs to change in your heart and mind for your “walk” to match your “talk”?

4.How will you implement God’s will for you based on what He showed you through the lesson this week?

The Big Idea (author’s main purpose in writing; the one thing all the other things in the passage is about; if you couldn’t talk about it, you would still understand the passage is trying to convey this):

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a...

Armor of God – Week One – Sizing Up The Enemy

Welcome to Boot Camp!   For the next seven weeks we will be training with our weapons (God’s Word and prayer) in preparation for the battle of our lives and the lives of others!   And we will be learning how to equip ourselves with the Armor of God. Priscilla Shirer’s Armor of God Bible study is a MUST-DO for EVERY BIBLE STUDENT!   I don’t mean to shout, but I can’t emphasize this enough!!!   We are at war boys and girls.   And our enemy wants to keep us in the dark about that fact.   If he can convince us that he does not exist or that our God is not good or that we are not loved and treasured by the King and Creator of the Universe, he wins the battle.   But can I share something with you?   OUR ENEMY HAS ALREADY LOST THE WAR!!!!!   His time is short and he is grasping at anything we leave dangling in an attempt to drag us down.   So let’s not leave too much dangling. My church begins the Armor of God study tonight (9/9/15). ...
