Bible Study: Revelation - What Was, What Is, What Is To Come - Chapter 9

Please forgive this rough draft format, as these are my raw study notes. I felt a great sense of urgency to publish them rather than waiting until I had the time to pretty them up. Thank you and I pray that God blesses you through this material.

Take a few minutes to savor Revelation Chapter 9. Then return here and ponder the thoughts, answer the questions, and be sure to leave comments about your own revelations.

9:1 — 5th trumpet — star falls to earth and is given the key to the abyss. He opens it and smoke pours out, darkening the sun and sky. Locusts come out of the smoke with the power of scorpions to torture those without God's seal on their foreheads for 5 months. The star is the angel-king mentioned in 9:11. The Int'l Bible Commentary says this is probably a fallen angel.

9:2 — See Genesis 19:28; Exodus 19:18; Joel 2:10 (AMP)

9:3 - locusts — see Exodus 10:1-20 and Joel 1:2-2:11 for more background on locust plagues. See Exodus 2:12-15 (AMP)

9:4 — See Ezekiel 9:4 (AMP)

9:5 — five months — the approximate lifespan of a locust in today's world.

9:6 — See Job 3:21 (AMP) 9:7 — See Joel 2:4 (AMP) 9:8 — See Joel 1:6 (AMP) 9:9 — See Joel 2:5 (AMP)

9:12 — 1st woe is past; two other woes are yet to come — See 8:13 — "woe, woe, woe... " Woe vs. Whoa! It depends on which side of the gates of heaven you're on!

9:13 — 6th trumpet — voice from altar tells angel to release the 4 angels who are bound in the river Euphrates. 1/3 of mankind is killed by the plagues that come from their horses — 2nd woe.

Four horns of the altar — see Exodus 27:2.

9:15 — "the four angels" — are these the four horsemen? Released by the seals of the scroll and held back until now?

9:17 — breastplates — Fire — pyrinos — fiery red, the color of fire (Strong's 4447/KWSB 4791).
The Int'l Bible Commentary says that the colors of the riders' breastplates (red, dark blue and yellow) correspond respectively to the fire, smoke and sulfur which come from the demonic horses' mouths. The creatures smell like hell.

mouths - Fire — pyr — fire, flames (Strong's 4442/KWSB 4786). Describing fire, smoke and sulfur. See Revelation 9:18; Psalm 11:6; Isaiah 30:33; Ezekiel 38:22; Revelation 14:10; 19:20.

What do you think the fire represents? Does this appear to represent judgment due to sin? Can you see the fire destroy what has been corrupted by sin?

See v. 20 — those who didn't die by this plague still refuse to repent!

9:18 — mouths - Fire — pyr — fire, flames (Strong's 4442/KWSB 4786).

What do you think the fire represents? Does this appear to represent judgment due to sin? Can you see the fire destroy what has been corrupted by sin?

See v. 20 — those who didn't die by this plague still refuse to repent!

9:20 — See Psalms 115:4-7; 135:15-17; Isaiah 17:8 (AMP)

9:20-21 - See Exodus 8:15 —just as pharaoh hardened his heart, the people didn't repent. 10:1-11:14 — interlude before the seventh trumpet.

  • Remember that the main message of the book of Revelation is the infinite love, power and justice of the Lord Jesus Christ. How is this evident in today’s text?
  • What attributes of God do you see in this chapter?
  • What scripture seemed to be God speaking directly to you? What is He teaching you in these verses? How does He want you to respond?

Homiletics Training: Content

Homiletics .   By definition, “homiletic” is the art of preaching or writing sermons.   I think we would all agree that our pastors study the Bible thoroughly to deliver sermons every Sunday to their congregations.   The beautiful news is that every child of God can use this discipline to study the Bible for themselves. As a member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Leadership, part of my required preparation each week is to prepare homiletics for the passage we are studying.   BSF offers an engaging seminar on how to use this method to study the Scriptures.   I’ve taken the seminar several times under two different leaders and I’ve learned something new every time I’ve attended.   I’ve also been doing the process of homiletics for over ten years and I can say that there is no better teacher than the Holy Spirit in this process!   So keep practicing.   Keep sharing and discussing.   I’ve been posting my homiletics on this blog for quite a while, now.   And I would like to share wit
